NEW PROGRAMS IN TECHNOLOGY AND HEALTH CARE
As you might expect, almost all new programs announced or launched in B.C. over the past several months are in the fields of technology or health care. Most of these programs are slated to begin this September, although a few have already launched their first intake. For graduating high school students, applications for admission are still open for some these programs. For students in Grades 10 and 11 now considering their post-secondary options, there are several new and unique career options within these programs across the province. TECHNOLOGY PROGRAMS CAMOSUN COLLEGE: Interactive Media Developer The new Interactive Media Developer program is a double credential program training student to work in application, game or web development, graphic design, and user interaction. MORE INFO CAMOSUN COLLEGE: Electrical Engineering Technology – Marine The new Electrical Engineering Technology—Marine & Industrial Diploma program will train students to work in the growing marine or industrial electrical sectors. Graduates will also have the opportunity to pursue an education in engineering at the University of Victoria. MORE INFO VANCOUVER ISLAND UNIVERSITY: Integrated Engineering Vancouver Island University has created an Integrated Engineering Diploma program that combines mechanical, drafting, and civil technologist training into a single learning stream. To be launched in September 2020, the diploma is unique in BC because it combines three streams into one program. MORE INFO NICOLA VALLEY INSTITUTE OF TECH: Renewable Energies Technology The Nicola Valley Institute of Technology has announced the creation of a Renewable Energies Technology Diploma program, described by the school as “a direct response to the increased need for quality training in the Renewable Energies sector.” MORE INFO NORTH ISLAND COLLEGE: Computer Information Systems North Island College has launched a Computer Information Systems Certificate program at the Campbell River campus to prepare students to develop and manage information systems. The program includes computer programming, web scripting, database fundamentals, and systems administration courses that combine theory with practical applied skills. MORE INFO COLLEGE OF THE ROCKIES: Autonomous Systems Technician The College of the Rockies [Cranbrook] has announced the launch of a new two-year Autonomous Systems Technician Diploma program in September 2020. The program will train students to install, maintain, and repair telecommunications equipment related to autonomous heavy vehicles and the sensor networks used in surface mines in Alberta and British Columbia. MORE INFO LANGARA COLLEGE: B.Sc in Bioinformatics Langara College has announced the launch of a new Bachelor of Science in Bioinformatics degree, the first-of-its kind degree from a college in British Columbia.The program builds on two existing Langara programs in the field: an Associate of Science Degree in Bioinformatics, and a Diploma in Bioinformatics. Beginning September 2020, the four-year program teaches students how to work with large biological data sets and develop skills to apply statistical tools for analysis. MORE INFO HEALTH CARE PROGRAMS CAMOSUN COLLEGE: Diagnostic Medical Sonography Vancouver Island’s first Diagnostic Medical Sonography (DMS) program launches in May at Camosun College in Victoria. Diagnostic medical sonographers are health care professionals who take images of and assess unborn babies, organs, tissues, and blood flow inside the body, providing key diagnostic information to doctors about a patient’s medical condition. The next intake in 2021 doubles the number of students to 32 in the two-year program. MORE INFO BC INSTITUTE OF TECH: Expands Diagnostic Medical Sonography BCIT has expanded their Diagnostic Medical Sonography program, adding 18 seats last fall and another 8 first-year seats this year, for a total capacity of 48 seats in the 27-month full-time Diploma commonly known as Ultrasound. MORE INFO COLLEGE OF NEW CALEDONIA: Diagnostic Medical Sonography The College of New Caledonia [CNC] in Prince George launched the first sonography program in the Interior of BC; one of only three publicly funded programs in BC. The application deadline for Fall 2020 is March 31. MORE INFO CAMOSUN COLLEGE: Certified Medical Laboratory Assistant Camosun College has launched a new Certified Medical Laboratory Assistant program to train students to become integral front-line healthcare workers responsible for collecting blood, fluids, and physiologic data used by physicians to diagnose medical conditions. MORE INFO PSBC, formed in 1974, is an informal collaborative of recruitment offices from all 25 BC public post-secondary institutions along with a small number of private, non-profits. PSBC exists solely to provide students, parents and high school Counsellors across BC with information about options in the provincial public post-secondary education system. www.postsecondarybc.ca
