The program assists youth between the ages of 16-30 who are not full-time students gain the necessary skills and confidence to secure and maintain employment in their chosen field.
In the first four weeks of the program, participants attend Monday to Friday (9:00 am to 3:30 pm) and are paid $13.85 per hour while acquiring the following skills and training:
During the remaining six weeks of the program participants are supported by program staff as they start their new job. This helps to ensure a smooth transition to the workforce as they are supported in managing work and life, adapting to the routine of working and ensuring they are progressing positively in their new position. An incentive is offered to employers who choose to hire a youth from our program, and they can be reimbursed $13.85 per hour plus mandatory employee related costs to a maximum of 180 hours. This incentive can open doors to participants and help them to compete for jobs they may not have all the skills or training required by the employer. Our next program starts in late January and may be perfect for your early graduates or youth you know that have already left school. There is also an expanded pilot project that will be offered in late March 2020. We hope you will consider sharing our information with any youth who is looking for work and who is ready to commit to the requirements of the program or a parent, educator, or business who would benefit from knowing about our program. If you would like further information, please contact me at 250.318.0597 to discuss this opportunity. Prospective youth can call or text us to arrange a time to meet with us. JUST ANNOUNCED: UNBC’s Early Entrance Award application deadline has been extended to January 31, 2020. This allows students extra time to apply for September 2020 or January 2021 entry, self-declare their grade 12 courses and predicted final grades, and be eligible for UNBC’s early entrance awards, which are divided into two categories. More Information Here. EVENTS ON CAMPUS: Member institutions across the province are hosting many different kinds of events for students, parents and counsellors. Check out our EVENTS PAGE every week to see what new events are being posted. From Information Sessions and Open Houses for students and parents to Counsellor events, all the information you need is here on our website. Most Online Applications now go through EducationPlannerBC Long before current Grade 12 students started elementary school, BC tried to create a centralized, online application system similar to the one in Ontario. While that first attempt was less than successful, over the past decade it has become a reality through EducationPlanner BC. This online platform, which is government-supported, is now the central point for applying online to 21 of the 25 public post-secondary institutions in BC. The most recent Fall 2019 additions to the service are Okanagan College and the University of Northern BC, and the plan is for both UBC and UVIC to become part of the system in 2020. That will leave BCIT and Royal Roads University as the only public institutions not yet on the application system. They both still have their own online application systems. The idea behind a central system is to make the process easier. When students decide to apply to one or more programs, they can complete multiple applications through Education Planner without having to re-enter the same information each time. In addition, Education Planner also enables a transcript exchange service, allowing transcripts to be sent electronically between post-secondary partners. From the APPLY PAGE on their website, it’s a three-step process: create your EducationPlanner account; create your basic profile of information [which you don’t have to re-enter again] and then apply to the institutions and programs of choice. Payment of the application fee for each institution is also done online – and be advised that if you don’t pay the fee, your application may not be processed by the receiving institution. From our postsecondarybc.ca website Institutional Directory you connect directly to the EducationPlanner apply page or the separate application page. While some institutions do still offer a paper application option, it’s becoming rarer! Check out our current listing of who does and doesn’t accept paper applications. Understanding the Application Language It might sound simple but applying for admission can be a complex process. As a first step, it’s critical to understand what kind of application process is being used: Selective; Limited; or Open. What’s the difference between them? The short answer: selective means you are competing with all other applicants and it’s the university or college that decides who is admitted; limited means the institution has a limit on how many spaces are available, often on a first-applied, first-qualified basis; and open means that there fewer requirements and most qualified applications are likely to be accepted. For a more detailed definition of these terms, and many others you will encounter in the world of post-secondary, check out the GLOSSARY OF TERMS on our postsecondarybc.ca website. More Application Deadlines While the three largest provincial universities have early application deadlines, as do Nursing and some other health-related programs around the province, other types of programs also have spring application deadlines that students need to be aware of. These are often diploma programs with a limited number of spaces available and very specific course requirements for admission; technology diplomas and unique programs only offered by one or two institutions often have strict deadlines because of high demand. Some institutions also set ‘Early Admission’ deadlines. Those who apply by the deadline will be considered first, and if all available seats in the program are filled, no more applications would be accepted. Graduating Grade 12 students, along with current Grade 10 and 11 students who are looking at their options, need to make sure they are aware of both the application deadline and course requirements. If you don’t meet all requirements with the minimum marks required, your application will probably be declined. Here’s are some of the deadlines from member institutions this spring.
