We encourage Indigenous applicants to declare their Aboriginal ancestry when they apply to VIU. Students who have declared their ancestry are eligible for Indigenous scholarships, awards, and bursaries, and are notified of other opportunities such as community events, job postings and more! It also helps ensure that VIU continues to provide great resources for Indigenous students. No proof of ancestry is required, and the declaration can be done during the application process or after through the online student record. Check out this video to learn a bit more about VIU’s Aboriginal Gathering Place. VIU Off-Campus Housing: supporting students with a range of rental-accommodation inquiries. Finding affordable rental housing in Nanaimo is challenging and every VIU student has their own needs. We have house-hunting strategies and resources that may work well for you. We also regularly speak to planners and developers about the future of housing for all students. House repairs, pests and privacy are some of the issues we hear about. Knowing your legal rights can often be what’s needed. Roommate fallouts can be major stressors, too. We’ll try to help you find a roommate, but we’re also here if things go wrong. And, if we don’t know the answers, we’re in touch with related support services on and off-campus. When it’s time to move out, common questions are about breaking leases, subletting and getting deposits back. Get in touch and we’ll talk you through what you need to know. Contact Michael in VIU Off-Campus Housing at [email protected] for more information or support. Visit the VIU Off-Campus Housing site for lots of useful resources and links. Upcoming Info Session
