Study BOTH majors and launch your career with Computing and Financial Management! uwaterloo.ca/computing-financial-management/ This fall, the Schulich School of Engineering is again offering up to 50 entrance scholarships valued at $4,000 each. The Diversity Champions in Engineering Awards will support students who have overcome barriers while pursuing their education, those who have worked to promote inclusion in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM), and those who have ideas for how to make our school and profession more inclusive. All applicants to first-year engineering are eligible to apply for the awards.
According to Engineers Canada, only one per cent of undergraduate students in Canadian engineering programs identified as Indigenous Peoples, and only 20.7 per cent as female in 2016. Women account for only 12.8 per cent of the practising profession of engineering in Canada. It is critical we continue to bring together a variety of perspectives within engineering for the profession to thrive. If you know of any students who would benefit from these awards, please encourage them to apply for engineering at the University of Calgary and complete this brief award application. If they send it to us at [email protected] by January 9, 2020 they will be eligible for consideration. APPLICATION DEADLINES LOOMING FOR LARGER UNIVERSITIES Among the varied and often confusing aspects of planning for post-secondary is the myriad of different deadlines – especially when it comes to applying for admission to 1st year university. While the majority of BC universities and colleges have flexible admission processes to first year university in most programs, the three largest BC public universities along with one specialty institution have very early 2020 deadlines that students cannot miss if they want to be considered. Here are these deadline dates to apply for 1st year admission in September 2020: UBC: Application deadline for all programs is January 15th, 2020 SFU: Application deadline for all programs is January 31, 2020 UVIC: Application deadline-all programs [except Nursing] is February 28, 2020 Emily Carr University: Admission deadline is January 15 to all programs. _______________________________________________________________ NURSING PROGRAMS - APPLICATION DEADLINES 2020 Perhaps the most competitive program admissions in BC are for Nursing [Bachelor of Science in Nursing - BSN] degree programs right across the province. Here are some upcoming deadlines: UVIC/CAMOSUN: Students applying to UVIC Nursing must apply through one of our partner colleges. The deadline for students applying to the Camosun College/UVic BSN program for September 2020 is December 15, 2019 at noon. OKANAGAN COLLEGE: BSN (Years 1 and 2) – January 15, 2020 THOMPSON RIVERS UNIVERSITY: BSN – January 31, 2020 UNIVERSITY OF THE FRASER VALLEY: BSN – January 31, 2020 DOUGLAS COLLEGE: Applications open for Academic Foundation for Potential Nursing Applicants – the first year for our Nursing program – on February 1st for the Winter 2021 intake for students that missed Fall 2020 deadline. This will only be open for 3 days. COLLEGE OF THE ROCKIES: Deadline to apply to the Bachelor of Science in Nursing program is February 15th and all the academic requirements, including a CASPer Assessment, must be submitted by February 28th. COAST MOUNTAIN COLLEGE: Applications must be received by March 31 and all supporting documents by April 15. Two other Nursing programs of note: KWANTLEN: Currently not accepting first year BSN (Health Foundations) applications. LANGARA: Current HS students are not eligible for BSN admission; application deadline for those eligible [admission requires 5 specific 1st Year university courses] is January 31. ______________________________________________________________ ENGINEERING TRANSFER PROGRAMS In addition to the many Engineering degree options at UBC, UVIC and SFU there are excellent ‘transfer’ options that allow students to start in a smaller program. However, these programs are also limited in their capacity and admission is selective. Upcoming deadlines include: University of the Fraser Valley [UFV]: Engineering Transfer & and all other selective admission programs is January 31, 2020 Thompson Rivers University [TRU]: Engineering Transfer (Year 1 & 2) and Software Engineering is March 1st, 2020 _____________________________________________________________ OTHER HIGH DEMAND PROGRAMS WITH EARLY DEADLINES Across the province there are a number of other high-demand programs in specialty areas that have early application deadlines. These include the following: Respiratory Therapy at Thompson Rivers University: February 1, 2020 Veterinary Technology at Douglas College: January 15 Animal Health Technology at Thompson Rivers University: February 15 Diagnostic Medical Sonography at the College of New Caledonia [Prince George]: Applications must be submitted by March 31, 2020 and all accompanying documentation must be submitted no later than April 30, 2020 for consideration for the September 2020 intake. All Application Deadline Information in this publication was provided by Member Institutions. ______________________________________________________________ WHERE CAN YOU EARN OVER $200,000 A YEAR? Careers that pay over $200K a year might sound too good to be true, but if you have the right skills and experience, there are careers in Canada where you can take home at least $200K every year. On a listing of 20 top careers with a big paycheque, it’s interesting to note that seven of these career fields are in health care, and that almost all of them require a combination of several years of post-secondary education and/or extensive experience. You can check out this list and others on our PSBC website in the KNOWLEDGEBASE section, under the Career Exploration heading. ______________________________________________________________ How did BC come to have 11 Universities? Prior to the opening of SFU in 1965, there were only two universities in BC, and it was almost 30 years after that before a fourth materialized. Now there are 11 public universities in BC, in addition to three private, non-profit universities who are also PSBC member institutions. The rapid growth of post-secondary options in our province is part of the evolution of higher learning in Canada, where each individual province governs their own system. For those interested in understanding how our Canadian post-secondary system was created and has developed over the past 200 years, check out our PSBC website KNOWLEDGEBASE section. A series of articles by Alex Usher [Higher Education Strategies Association] traces the history of universities and colleges from their beginnings in the early 1800’s. There’s also an interesting article on Canada’s three types of colleges. ______________________________________________________________ NEXT TIME: New programs being launched by PSBC institutions. PSBC, formed in 1974, is an informal collaborative of recruitment offices from all 26 BC public post-secondary institutions along with a small number of private, non-profits. PSBC exists solely to provide students, parents and high school Counsellors across BC with information about options in the provincial public post-secondary education system. www.postsecondarybc.ca Commencement: Friday, June 12, 2020
