Students who have been nominated by their schools as National Book Award recipients may submit applications to the National Scholarship Program. In addition, students who identify themselves as meeting the scholarship criteria are invited to apply directly for the National Scholarship, without having been nominated for the Book Award. These are students who demonstrate superior academic performance, original and creative thought, and exceptional achievement in a broad context. They excel in academic pursuits, demonstrate enthusiasm for intellectual exploration and have a strong involvement in the lives of their schools and communities. Each year approximately ten students are named National Scholars (winners) and ten are named Arbor Scholars (runners-up). Applications for Fall 2019 intake open on Tuesday, October 1. Application Evaluation When applying to the university through ApplyAlberta, students can select a first-choice and second-choice program. It is important to note program choices are evaluated consecutively, meaning we begin evaluating a student's second choice only when they are put on a waitlist for their first choice, choose to cancel their application for their first choice or are denied admission to their first choice. Important notes about deciding between first- and second-choice programs:
Competitive versus first-qualified, first admitted
Early Admission All programs automatically assess students for early admission. To ensure we have all necessary information, let your students know their ApplyAlberta profile should include all grade 12 classes completed, classes currently underway and classes they will be taking. Early admission is based on a student's final grades in grade 11 and/or grade 12 courses. Should applicants make changes to their course schedule after applying, they can update their admission file by using the Confirmation of High School Registration form. We do not require midterm marks, but providing us with the most up-to-date information may ensure applicants are properly considered for early admission. The Loran Scholars Foundation is beginning its search for the 31st class of Loran Scholars, and we need your help to identify students who demonstrate strength of character, dedication to serving others in the community, and the promise of leadership potential.
The individuals we seek possess integrity, courage, compassion, intellectual curiosity, as well as a high level of personal autonomy and self-motivation. Valued at up to $100,000, the Loran Award includes study at one of our 25 partner universities, summer internships, mentorship, and participation in a community of supporters and alumni working towards a better country and world. Here are the steps to sponsor candidates: Candidates wishing to be sponsored must select Sponsored by (or seeking sponsorship from) my school in the online application, and then enter the name and email address of the designated school contact in the Educational Background section. Every candidate must designate a referee, whether they end up in the sponsored or direct pool. The candidate needs to finalize their part of the online application in order to have the reference request email sent. The reference word limit is 250 words. Once the reference has been submitted, the school contact will receive an email allowing them to log in and confirm whether or not the student is being sponsored by the school. The online sponsorship form takes about 2 minutes to complete. For more information about your role as a sponsor, please visit loranscholar.ca/becoming-a-scholar/information-for-schools. Important Dates: The deadline for school sponsored applications is October 17th, 2019 at 8:00pm (Eastern Time). Each high school may sponsor up to three students. Additional students may submit direct pool applications (without sponsorship) by October 24th, 2019 at 8:00pm (Eastern Time). Learn more: Questions?
