Important Update: Discovery Days 2022
Due to new COVID-19 health and safety protocols around events and gatherings, we have decided to host Discovery Days 2022 virtually on February 23, from 9 am - 2 pm. It will be hosted on a virtual event platform called Pheedloop, which allows students to engage with us in fun ways, including live chats and gamification. Our VIU Student Ambassadors will be hosting and will focus on the student experience while still giving attendees lots of opportunities to explore our programs and services. Students will get the most out of the event if they are able to log in individually from a computer. Following the event will be a Parent Sessions from 5:00-7:00 pm for guardians and caretakers interested in learning more about supports and services like financial aid and student housing. We look forward to hosting you live on February 23rd! Registration information is coming soon, keep checking our events page for details. If you have any question, please email us at [email protected] and we would be more than happy to help! We want to start off by sharing just some of Vancouver Film School’s triumphs in 2021. We were named a Leading Film School in North America by MovieMaker, the #1 Global Animation School by Animation Career Review, and a Leading Worldwide Film School by Variety Magazine for the fifth consecutive year! We were also pleased to see that hundreds of VFS Alumni were credited on Golden Globe and Oscar-nominated/winning projects.
In addition, we would like to invite your students to other upcoming VFS events. Our first Winter Open House of the year will take place online on February 5, and will provide students with the opportunity to learn about VFS’s full-time programs, our part-time courses & workshops (known as VFS CONNECT), meet faculty & staff, and much more. We’d also like to let you know about our upcoming Creative Break – a series of two-day workshops held during Spring Break (March 14-22) in Film Production, Animation, Acting, Writing, Digital Design, Makeup, and Sound Design. Students interested in Creative Break can use the code VFSPartner for 20% off. We also have a limited amount of free spots saved for teachers as well! If you are interested in expanding your own creative skillset please reach out as soon as possible. With such a variety of workshops available, there is truly something for everyone, from designing a personal logo to building a virtual board game! Learn more about CONNECT and the full list of workshops here. As well, we would love to continue the conversation outside of our events. If your students are attending other educational fairs, conferences, trade shows etc. and would like to see VFS attend, don’t hesitate to let us know. On the Admission front, we are fast approaching our application deadline of March 1, 2022. We are:
This information is available for each student in their student centre. We publish exact averages a student needs to maintain in April once the competitive averages have been finalized. For more information on next steps, visit our webpage for admitted students. We also have a series of webinars for newly admitted students to learn about next steps as they prepare to join us this fall. February 1, 2022 is the deadline for all Bachelor of Nursing, Interior Design, Midwifery, and Education applications.
This includes submission of transcripts and other required supporting documentation by February 1 (such as completing the Casper exam for Midwifery applicants.) February 1, 2022 is also the deadline for Early Admission What is Early Admission? Many universities offer Early Admission, which is exactly what it sounds like: a period of time where your student can apply to their program(s) of choice earlier than the regular admission deadline. It is an ideal time to apply and helps expedite the process so they hear back earlier too. At MRU, we actually receive most of our applications and fill the majority of our programs during Early Admission, which runs from Oct. 1 to Feb. 1. All applications received during that time are evaluated equally. Once Early Admission has ended, remaining spots are offered to competitive applicants on an ongoing and first-come, first-served basis. If your student waits too long to apply, their desired program may already be full. What benefits are there to applying early? The sooner your student gets an acceptance offer, the sooner they can begin preparing for university life. This includes more time to meet with an advisor, register for courses they’ll enjoy, and sort out housing and academic supports, such as Access and Inclusion Services. In the event that an acceptance letter doesn’t come, it also means that they’ll have more time to explore alternative entrance options. Can my student apply to more than one program? Is it a good idea? Yes and yes! It’s always a good idea to have a back up plan just in case. Some institutions, MRU included, make the process easy by allowing students to pick two program choices with only one application. Why is this helpful? If your student is accepted into their second choice program at MRU before hearing back about their first choice, they can accept the initial offer and pay the deposit to hold their seat. If they get an offer for their first choice later on, they can easily make the switch to that program instead. Either way, this ensures the start of your student’s university experience and eliminates any risk of waiting too long to decide and potentially missing out on both programs. Help! My student is missing an admission requirement and/or doesn't meet the competitive average for their intended program. What are their options? Don’t give up hope. While they may not be qualified for their dream program just yet, some universities will offer alternative routes to get your student where they want to go. MRU offers a range of alternative entrance options for students who want to complete missing course work or boost their grades while also starting university life. For example, the University Entrance Option, which may include taking Grade 12 equivalent courses, provides a structured curriculum to get them started on their university level coursework while they prepare for admission into their intended degree or diploma program. Should prospective students meet with an Admissions and Recruitment Specialist before applying? Absolutely! Understanding admission requirements and making sure you have the right high school courses and a competitive average can get tricky. Even if your student is fairly certain that their application is strong and ready to go, meeting with an Admissions and Recruitment Specialist can ensure they’re on the right track and give you extra peace of mind. At MRU, we always recommend that future students meet with a member of our team before applying. We offer a range of ongoing virtual information sessions so applicants can feel prepared and confident. Important reminder: Finish Strong - be careful about dropping courses! A common admissions barrier we see from high school applicants is understanding the difference between
Applicants are required to meet all three categories in order to obtain final admission and start classes in the Fall. At minimum, students must have five 30-level courses for admission, with at least three being from our Group A courses. Last year we saw a number of students dropping courses in their second semester, thus no longer meeting the minimum requirements and being unable to receive final admission for their programs. Please encourage students to be in contact with us about any course changes, we love to hear from them! Admission to the Bachelor of Engineering in Software Engineering at TRU is open for Fall 2022 and seats are limited. Software engineering is one of the most in-demand and fastest growing professions. At TRU, software engineering students experience hands-on learning in our state-of-the-art labs, along with small class sizes giving students the advantage of personal attention from their instructors – no TA’s.
In the Engineering Department, we want to ensure students at different academic levels have an opportunity to explore the Software Engineering industry, which is one reason we have an admission grade requirement of only 67% or higher, except for ENGL 12, which is 73%. This is just one of the many advantages of applying to the Bachelor of Engineering in Software Engineering at TRU. If students want to take advantage of the lower academic requirements, they must apply right away because we are processing applications and making admission decisions as they are received. April 30, 2022, is the deadline to apply, however, space permitting applications may be accepted after this date, but for students to take advantage of the lower academic requirements they must apply NOW. APPLY NOW Admission Requirements: High School Admission Requirements 1. BC Grade 12 (or equivalent). 2. BC English 12/English 12 First Peoples with a minimum of 73% (or equivalent). 3.
